NSW Rail Museum a glimpse into the rich rail heritage of Thirlmere

- The historic town of Thirlmere, located in Sydney's southwest, has been home to a significant rail heritage collection since 1975. This collection includes over 100 rolling stock items associated with the history of railways in New South Wales.

- The rail corridor site, spanning 5 hectares, along with much of the collection, is owned by the New South Wales Government.

- Thirlmere, initially established with the arrival of the Great Southern Railway in 1863 to 1867, grew with the presence of railway workers, with a temporary tent city emerging to house them. Its proximity to Thirlmere Lakes was valuable as it provided water for the steam trains, pumped to a siding at the nearby town of Couridjah.

- In 1919, the Thirlmere section of the Main Southern Railway was deviated to a less steep alignment with easier grades, and the original line became the Picton Loop Line. Today, the loop line serves as a link to the main line, allowing heritage trains to operate beyond the local area on a line clear of other working trains.

- The NSW Rail Museum, located in Thirlmere, is a significant feature of the village and is brought to you by Transport Heritage NSW, proudly funded by the NSW Government. For more information, one can visit Transport Heritage NSW's website.
