About Caledonian Railway

History of the Caledonian Railway

The Caledonian Railway (CR) was a significant Scottish railway company established in the early 19th century. Its primary objective was to create a vital link between English railways and the bustling city of Glasgow. Here are some key points about its history:

Formation and Expansion: The CR opened its main line between Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Carlisle in 1848, forming an alliance with the English London and North Western Railway. It progressively extended its network, reaching cities like Edinburgh and Aberdeen. The CR also developed an extensive network of branch lines around Glasgow.

Competition and Challenges: The CR faced fierce competition from other Scottish railways, including the North British Railway and the Glasgow and South Western Railway. While it established primacy in certain areas, it encountered challenges elsewhere. Shareholders sometimes disapproved of the substantial expenditures made during this expansion.

Steamer Passenger Traffic: The CR operated steamer services on the Firth of Clyde, serving popular island resorts. Fast boat trains connected Glasgow to steamer piers. Although the CR was denied permission to operate its own steamers, it formed a partnership with the Caledonian Steam Packet Company.

Grouping and Legacy: In 1923, the Railways Act led to the grouping of British railways, and the CR became part of the newly formed London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). Many of its principal routes are still in use today, including the original main line between Carlisle and Glasgow, which is now part of the West Coast Main Line.
