About Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway

The Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway is a heritage railway located in Bo'ness, Scotland. Here are some key points about its fascinating past:

Origins: The railway's history dates back to the 1840s when the Slamannan and Borrowstounness Railway was built. Its primary purpose was to transport coal from the local mines. Over time, this railway became part of the former North British Railway on the Firth of Forth.

Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS): Today, the Bo'ness and Kinneil Railway is operated by the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, a registered charity. The SRPS has lovingly preserved this historic line, ensuring that visitors can experience the magic of steam and diesel-hauled trains.

Track Length: The railway covers over 5 miles (8 km) of track, running between Bo'ness and Manuel Junction, passing through Kinneil and Birkhill. This route essentially encompasses the entire original Slamannan and Borrowstounness Railway.

Museum of Scottish Railways: Bo'ness railway station serves as the nucleus for the Museum of Scottish Railways. In 2012, the museum expanded with the addition of a 16,000 sq. ft. train shed. Here, you'll find the last remaining "Glasgow Blue Train," a recently restored Class 126 Diesel Multiple Unit, and other heritage rolling stock. Explore locomotives, learn about Scottish railways through the ages, and even operate a railway signal!
